TEMP SENDER /GAUGE

HI all

here is a good one car is a  84 1.8 dx cab gti

as soon as i turn the ignition on my temp gauge goes right the way across to verry hot teven if i unplug the temp sender (which is new)
even tryed a set of new clocks and still the same problem ,
checked the earth to the dash panel aswell

any ideas

The sender feed wire is touching earth or has been made an earth by mistake  

Simple test on any mechanical guage is to earth the feed wire -the one that goes to the sender -guage should then read full .

hi did yiu get a fix for this, thats what mine does goes to nearly full even when disconnected!! help
