temp gauge

hello every one and merry christmas.
i was just wondering if any one could help me.the temp gauge in my golf has stoped working and the oil light has come on very dim.is this a common problem? iv had it to a garage and the fan still works and the oil sender thing still works.any help appreciated.

check the dash earth that connects to the right side back of the rocker cover is connected this causes that problem if its not secure :wink:

Can someone explain the reasoning behind putting the earth there. I can't for the life of me understand why they didnt just earth to the chassis behind the dash?
