Temp gauge showing overheating.
Engine dosent overheat. Travelled 300 miles with temp gauge telling me it is. Plenty of water in. Head gasket must be ok, no bubbles or mayo in oil or in water jacket. Car starts fine, within 4mins flashing temp gauge and needle goes overheat. Driving steady up the M1 the gauge settles and works fine, 40 miles later goes bananas. Cleaned connections on senders side of head. Any help anyone? The engine ain't cookin'.

Faulty guage or voltage stabilizer ? Clocks on the MK1 can be a pain if they go faulty and they could be as you have changed the sender . Why not fit an aftermarket guage in the centre consul for piece of mind ? Yellow/red wire feeds the clocks for coolant
