Temp gauge problem

Just awoken the campaign from its winter hibernation for an mot and have found that a fault has appeared on the temp gauge.
When the ignition is turned on the red LED flashes for a few seconds and then goes out , after approx 7 to 8 seconds it starts flashing again and the needle goes straight over to the right and stays there. It make no difference whether the engine is running or not. Have disconnected all sensors and its the same.
Has anybody out there experienced this problem before ? If so any advice would be welcome before I start to delve into the wiring.

Thanks

Have you checked that water level in the expansion bottle?

Disconnecting the sensors will not stop the light flashing.

You may have a duff sensor - check each one with a multimeter - i'm sure haynes will tell you what the readings should be.  the washer bottle one is a simple switch and the one in the head is a resistive sensor i think.

I had the same problem on mine, and ended up putting a new wire in as I couldn't find the fault. The new wire did solve the problem though.

Thanks for the replies guys . The water level is fine so I will start with the sensors and work my way through the system.

An update on the above problem .

Followed the wiring through the system including removal of dash clocks.
All wiring seemed fine so suspected problem was the control unit located in the fuse box, it looks like a relay with a number 43 on the top. VW told me this was no longer available ( for the last 16 years ) but when pushed came up with an alternative part no 191 919 376 A .
Fitted the part this morning and problem is solved.

Hi Golfgit

I'm having the same problems as you except the temp needle does nothing?

Just wondered what model and year golf you have?

Hi

My car is an 83 campaign. If your car has this control unit and you have checked the obvious ( ie sender unit ) then it could be worth looking at.
