tailgate solenoid recommendations anyone

Hi there, i've just my golf restored and tailgate smoothed but none of the solenoids seem to be able to pop the lock open.  I've tried like 6 diff types from normal plastic ones to stronger metal types made by JOM and also old skool ford granada ones which i've been told normally does the trick.  I'm thinking maybe its the look but its fully gresed and works fine, doesnt seem like its sticking in any way.  Running out of options. Can anyone offer advice? Cheers Dean

check the fit of the tailgate, if the rubber buffers are set a bit tight this puts more strain on the boot popper. loosen them off a bit and see how you go

I have one last owner had done on one of mine. Annoyingly solenoid just died on me on and needs changing, so am due to whip it out for replacement.

The solenoid itself looks no better than the average one you get on ebay for sub £20 (jom type), but I'm sure the lock itself has been modded a bit - will get a cuppa pics up for you over weekend if u can wait bud.

For some reason, the boot takes a good slam to close once open - not sure why as rubbers have been adjusted like…wondering if this has anything to do with the lock itself, (will try good greasing as musta been a while), but as long as it stays shut not a biggie at moe. List as long as me arm of other fixes!

thanks guys for your advice.

Johnny - the rubber buffers (circle rubber stops either side of tailgate?) are missing from my tailgate. Prob coz I replaced the tailgate in the restoration.  So on that note it should be easier to lift open without these? Not sure if i'm reading this right….

Jinsta - thanks. i've greased the lock thru but still no joy.  The mod to the lock sounds interesting and am keen to know more if there is a mod.  The lock mechanism is so hard that the solenoid can't trigger it open even when the tailgate is up/open.  I was thinking of anew lock but speaking to Crazy Quiff this morning he said there isn't really anything to the lock and nothing that abit of greasing shouldn't sort.
Weekend is fine for pics, much appreciated.

Dean

maybe the lower lock catch is adjusted too tight, there is some adjustment there as well as in the buffers :)

months gone now but here's pics of that solenoid set up. only got round to changing cuppa weeks back and round to posting back on this now

lock from inside with washer piece welded on…

sol unit in place fitted. the puller/cable end to left

complete unit. its grounded on itself as above shot and fixed to through tailgate via two spire clips

cable end looped and held with little clamp

In terms of sol kit make, its a 'Directed Electronics 522T' and all the bits on the completed pic are std pieces inc with kit (bar the little clamp) - got jammy with mine as found one for £10 on ebay in dec. terms of boot shutting...still have slam it, tried adjusting lock/catch but just made it worst

hope u got yours sorted in end
