Strange Headlight problem..

Lights work fine on sidelight, and dipped beam.  However when I put them on High beam the N/S is fine, but the O/S drops to sidelights !! and then back to dipped beam when I turn high beam off !

Anyone had this, is something wired wrong, or bad earth etc ?

Where are the earths on these cars '89 Clipper

Thanks
Marc

I expect the wiring/connections to the lights are corroded. When I got my first cabby the wiring was bad and I had the same problem as you. I had to replace some of the connections as they had been badly bodge repaired previously.

Just make sure they are corrosion free and if you do have to cut and join wires that they are nice and watertight afterwards. Use some heatshrink tubing if you can. Solder the wires together if you can too.

Cheers,

Ross

Change the bulb if you not done it already. When you switch to main beam, the dipped beam circuit is switched off. Only ever one or the other is on unless you hold the stick forwards. All that's happened is the main bulb filiment has blown, but the dipped beam is ok.  If a new bulb doesn't solve it then check your fuses, as all the lights are fused independantly, 4 fuses in total.

Thanks for replies,

Ross, I have checked the connections at the light end, and all looked clean and tight.

I will try bulb like Maniac says and if not then I will go back and look deeper into connections again.

I looked at the bulb and couldn't see any broken filaments, but I never knew that when on full beem the dipped beam turns off !

Thanks

Changed the bulb, but no change…  Is there a seperate fuse for dipped beam and full beam then ??

If its not fuse (will check tomorrow) then which of the three ires to the headlight is the full beam?

Thanks

yes they are on separete fuses. should be fuse 3 or 4 depending on if it's the left or right hand side.

The pin for main beam is the terminal on the right hand side as you look at the back of the blub with the middle terminal at the top.  The left is the common, and the top one is for dipped beam.
