Still Getting a High Beam Problem - HELP! - ALL SORTED

:banghead: –

Trying to sort my Golf out for it's Mot. Not had her FOR long so are in need of some expert advise.

My hi-beam is not working both sides.

I thought it was just blubs because both were blown, so fitted new ones today with no luck.

The low beams work fine. but when I pull the colum stick the low beam go out and I get NO high beams.

I also got NO blue dash light.
I've check the fuses (9 & 10 ) and they are to fine.

Could any body tell me where I might look further to investigate for faults?

Kind Regards
Tom

hi mate, could be the column switch itself, had it with mine. take the plastic cover off the steering column and see if it is working correctly when you pull the stalk

I was begining to think that it might be the stalk
switch myself. Just abit reluctant to start striping things down as I ran out of day light today. Do i just need to take off the streering casing or do I need to remove the steering wheel?

Did you solve your problem with a bit of contact clearing or was it a stalk replacement?

Regards
Tom

you need to take steering wheel off aswell mate. dead easy pull out the horn push and i think its a 24mm nut holding wheel on. I ended up buying a new switch mate only cost £18 plus VAT from local motor factors :) not worth messing about

Hi Cabbydale,

Took off streering wheel & striped column surround.
Deep inside stalk switch i found small metal inner spring switch fused to it's plastic housing. So it was unable to contact the high beam position.  Took a sharpe scapel knife and cut down and around the metal part edge very carefully and got it free and moving up and down on it's inner spring.

THEN CAME TRICKY STUFF. Putting it all back together.

The stalk switch is full of springs and moving plastic fitting which have to go back in the correct order. You need seven pairs of tiny nimble hands. (Mind are like short fat sausages). Got it all back together and noticed I forgot one of the metal connector strips. Which was still seating on my dash. So I  had another go and finally got it all back together again.

And HA-PRESTO the high beam works. :D  8O

Dead please thanks again Caddydale.

Off for ticket Monday

Cheer Tom

All this golf stuff is abit new to me  :?  so it was a good learning curve today. It helps me get to know the car alittle as I have only had it for a few months. I had a series 1 years ago in the late 80s but never really had to fix it up.

I think the high beam issue might happen again because the previous owner fitted a double head light grill which i think could have well cause the melt down.

I think I need to look at the wattage in the new front spots?

I'm finding that the golfs come apart quite easy if you take your time.

What's your chosen ride and have got some pic of it maybe on the site

Cheers

tom,

the double light grille is standard on the cabrios i think and it has a seperate wiring adaptor to go into these spots. shoudnt cause a problem for you really. The only problem i have seen is where both headlights go dim due to a bad earth.

I love working on these cars, had a mk2 gti when i was 17 and loved the thing to bits. The more time you spend on them the easier things become :)

mine is a tornado red cabby that is going for test saturday :) will get some pics posted up when it passes

Hi Cabbydale.

Check out my black clipper cabby at the link below :

http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=113808

It's had quite abit of the expensive stuff done like new hood and a freshen up paint job. Timing belt and exhaust etc. The guy I bought it off needed the cash for a new baby. So I think I caught him just right as he needed to sell it. He was a young lad so he seem to rush things a little. So i had to fix up lots of little things. Like not putting back the side indicator light fittings after spray job.

I going to keep as standard as poss.
Cheers

Forgot to say the only thing I would like change is maybe the steering wheel because my old series 1 had a three spoke Wolfsburg which I think looked cool. At time I didn't know that it was a special extra.
