Sticking Starter Motor

The new Caddy starts and runs fine except that the starter sticks for approx 3-5 seconds after starting making a horrible sound :? . Has anyone come across this before or know of a fix?

Looking at the price lists the starter is unique to MK1 Diesels. Not sure if it is just a heavy duty version of the normal big block starter or whether it really is different.

Has anyone had any success rebuilding solenoids on starters or is it best just to get a reconditioned one?

Its not the ignition barrel mechanism not returning back to its correct position after starting causing the motor to keep turning is it?

Only problem I've had with starter motors is them NOT working at all. Sometimes this has been temporarily cured by a hefty "tap" with a soft headed mallet, but it usually means its time to get it reconditioned / replaced. How much are the diesel ones compared to the big block starters?

Hi Chris, I had a duff ignition switch many years ago on  MK1 Driver. Funnily enough it was about this time of year and on the last shopping day before xmas the local main dealer had one in stock and it was quite an easy swap.  :D

I think the problem now is the starter/solenoid  itself though as the key does return to its normal position and presumably its trying to release the starter from the flywheel.

Depending on where you look the Diesel starter is slightly cheaper than the GTI version which is a nice surprise. Will try a few scrappys over the hols and still have to pull the old one out and have a look to see if anything obvious is wrong with it.

So much non-car stuff to do at this time of year and the GTIs in the (relatively!!!) warm dry garage, so working in drive. Glad the evenings are now getting longer and warmer.

Might be worth taking the starter switch out, looping out with wire to test it. Mine went begining of the year and key seemed to operate fine at time. Can't recall tho if I had same problem with the starter motor or not.
