steering column earth point?

Hey all,

Fitted a new quaife quickrack to my mk1, but now all is re assembled, my horn isn't working.  I've found the problem, the centre part of the column (the part the wheel bolts too) has no continuity to earth. Other than through the bearings, how is this earthed?  Where would an earth strap go?

Please help, i'm hornless.

It should be earthed to the steering rack, did you see the brown wire coming out from the column when you removed the old rack? that's the earth.

Heh Heh, I forgot that when I did my rack and it is a real pig to do once the rack is back in..

Got exactly the same problem with no earth on the steering column shaft back to the body, and the horn not working because of it. Where is the steering column or rack earthed to the body  on an '89 GTI cabrio ?

Peer down the back of the engine , rack mount left hand side , should be on that part of the rack next to the mount [self tapper] . Brown wire earthed to either mount or body .
Best tackled with car raised .

   

Thanks for the help, will give it a look at the weekend, funnily enough checked around the mounting point with the car up this afternoon, but did not see the earthing point, probably me being blind ,

sorted it out, seems mine did not have an earth point, easy enough to fix, now all i got to sort out is the leak on the gearbox output shaft and some noisy tappets.
