starter on caddy conversion

Hi, finally got ready to start aaz conversion for first time. Then…nothing. It has a new battery. Lead from positive at battery to starter, twin wire to alternator. I used the thick red/black wire as the trigger .
I have tested out of car and using a wire from positive to trigger and the starter engaged.
What could it be ? have I used the correct wire for trigger? or should the thick red/black go to positive pin on starter?
thanks Sean

The trigger wire will have a white connector on it and will be about 10 inches long that comes through the bulkhead with the loom on mine it is a thick red wire with a female connector on you will need to patch a lead from this to the starter.

The other lead will be permanently live when the ignition is on.

I might be talking dutch as this is how it is on my cabby.
How this helps

Starter wire should be red with a black trace. It goes to the spade terminal on the starter solenoid.

Is this a manual or an auto?

Well I managed  to get it started. I think it may have been a poor connection from the trigger wire to the spade on the motor.
put new connector on and alls well.
thanks for any advice given. very much appreciated
