Starter motor?

Get one problem sorted another crops up !
When I go to start the engine, the starter motor now takes a few turns to get going, a new one was fitted 6 years ago.  The other day it got worse…it tried to start as usual and then went THUD and stopped. I waited a few seconds fearing the worst, then tried again and it started . This is now happening on a regular basis :? ………….Is it my Starter at fault as I can't think of anything else? :?

It could just be the cold weather, which both reduces the efficiency of the battery, and thickens the engine oil making it harder to turn over.

But why would it make a loud thud and stop turning over immediatley?

……because of the cold weather. Because when its cold, the efficiency of the battery is reduced, and the oil is thicker. So the starter might not have enough power to turn over the engine. The loud thud, I can't explain though. Maybe it is just what starters do when they can't quite turn over.

Thanks for the help paul_c  . Think I'm going to get it checked out as it worries me…..hate the thought of it not starting at all and being stranded at work! I work on a farm in the middle of nowwhere…..hate being a lady in distress  : )

No worries, its probably a popular day to check battery condition!

I'd imagine being on a farm is the BEST place for dealing with a non-starting car, they'll have at least a couple of tractors (almost all tractors are 12V) and a decent set of jump leads at least. Maybe a boost start pack too; and straps/towing equipment to tow start and plenty of staff to push start you if needed?

If you buy in all the feed then you may indeed have no tractors at the farm. If you grow some of it, then you'll at least have one or two, to tend to the land.
