Starter motor not engaging when cold

Just recently when the outside temp is around freezing the first time I try to start my car the starter motor won't engage initially so you get the nice mechanical graunchy noise.

New battery, recent genuine alternator, charging nicely & I've cleaned up the wiring connections.

Car is a 1.6 GTI EG engine & whilst I was cool with getting a new gen starter motor VW have no stock & can no longer get one.

I've read that when a starter motor doesn't disenage that can sometimes be cured be taking the motor apart & lubricating, thoughts as to if that would work with my engagement issue & is this fix poss with our type of starters ?

Daily drive so need to sort & I hate buying GSF electrical components with a passion, they list new starter motors for the 1.6 GTI anyone used them??

If need be I'd prefer to buy new than risk a used ebay special.

remove the starter motor and check the brass bush that is in the gearbox, the starter motor shaft sits in this bush,if its worn the starters play up,there £1 from gsf, should be changed when the starter motor is replaced
