Speedo explaination?

Hi. Im new to this forum having recently obtaining a Mk1 Golf GTi 1.6. The car is in a poor state but its slowly coming back to life.

There is one of a few questions that I'm hoping someone will be willing to help me out with. I am currently fitting the dashboard and all was going well until I got to the speedo. It would appear that there are 4 ports at the rear of the speedo however I've only got 3 that could possibly fit.

Could anyone please explain what these are for? If they only work the clocks or something then I'm not too concerned.

I know this may sound a bit scetchy however I'm willing to listen to any help.

by ports do you mean where the wiring plugs go

is it an older or new style dash ?

yes i meant the wiring plugs and its the old style dash , i think, the car is 1983

if you on about the back of the clocks!! there is speedo cable which comes from teh gearbox, a vacuum pipe which comes for the inlet manifold (i think) then you have to wireed plugs one small and one big which come from the fuse box
