Speedo Dial Problem

Speedo Dial Problem

Hi Here?s my problem I have a gearbox with no speedo feed from it so my speedo will not work, I want to keep the dash original as it?s using the early conical dash dials and the look I am after so no compromise there. Pic for ya!

I spoke to a company who sell a digital sensor via a pick up off wheel or hub that gives the signal this goes to a little square box or could go to a digital dial. not very eye friendly but would get it through an mot. But is there a way of converting this back in to a analogue input?

Or
Has anyone out there put a digital dial behind the original face of the golf dial and made it work as if standard, I also see the calibration also being a problem. I am guess the original dial would need taking apart and some how put the digital workings in place with just the needle poking through vw face.

Any info or help would be great or any leads as to company that builds or services dials
Thanks Mk1retro

Why dont you just get a gearbox with a speedo feed? Anything else would be a patch at best.

Because its the gear box that I want to use in my set up.  I found myself a Quaife sequential box and as it's really for race or rallying no speedo output.

it's a matter of turning the signal from an electronic feed to a mechanical movement. theres a strange device called a stepper motor that can do that.

or try this

What kind of gearbox do you have?

Heres their spec.
FWD 6-speed sequential universal gearbox
Quaife 6-speed FWD sequential universal gearbox runs straight cut gears with open face dog engagement. comes with dash gauge to show what gear you in.

You could probably work it out from your revs * gear ratio, upto a point.

Mark out the Rev counter with the apropriate marks and voila, it'd have to be calibrated in some way though. :dontknow:

If its race/rally what does it matter?

A lot of race cars are road legal, in order to be in a road legal class. If you 'step up' into a non-road-legal class, you find yourself up against some very exotic machinery. A non-working speedo would be a daft little thing to prevent you making the class.

fine if you want it as a race car then how about the speedo does more than tell you the speed. it also gives you the rate of change in speed both in acceleration and deccelaration. most actual race cars still have a speedo for this reason.

do you really want to be working out speed from your revs and gears whilst flying into a corner. i know i don't i've got other things to think about thanks.

I dont want anything   I was askng why a race/rally car would need to be road legal?

A rally car needs to be legal so it can drive between the special stages, on public roads. Other race cars - explanation above.

Then why build a gearbox without a speedo cable?

It will have an electronic sensor to provide a pulse, for an electronic speedo.

I have a Hall sensor on my car, in addition to the normal speedo cable, so I can (electronically) detect and record speed in my data logger. It bolts near to the transmission and senses the bolts of the CV joint. If I hook up the laptop while running the car, I can see real time speed, on the lappy, if needs be.

renault dont have a speedo drive in the gearbox.
they use the ABS sensors to generate 2 pulse (one from either wheel) and combining them to give a speed.

really not unusual in a modern car.

So can an electric speedo be fitted to it then? If so wouldn't this be the best option?

which is what this post is all about. :dontknow:
keeping the original look but using an electrical speedometer.

sorry to have dragged this thread off mate.
yes have a look at that link. the technology exists so it's a matter of finding it in the uk and suitable for use now.
