The speedo gets drive from the gearbox via the speedo cable, so you need to check this 1st before suspecting the clocks. Make sure its still connected to back of the clocks & is not broken or stuck and turns freely, also check the drive gear in the gearbox.
The rev counter gets a feed from the negative side of the coil, but cant remeber off the top of me head what colour it is (usually a green one but might be different on vw) make sure this wire has continutity from the coil negative up to the back of the clocks.
Also make sure you have a good earth between the back of the clocks and the rocker cover on the engine - a poor or broken earth here has been known to cause all sorts of problems!

i thought it was odd too as i understood the speedo was mechanically drive.

ive taken out the whole speedo cable and it all works, even when i connected it to the back of the speedo. its when im putting in the gearbox, thats where its not working. it feels like it seats itself but nothing happens when i drive.
any ideas??
