smoke from dash with headlights on!

hi everyone

i have a problem im hoping someone can shed some light on before i strip everything down.

was driving along the other nite all goin well headlights on dash lights on then all of a sudden i seen some smoke comming out the hole for the stereo (no stero currently fitted and all wires for one are taped up and not touching)

also had the heater blower on.

needless to stay i stoped the car very quickly and disconnected the battery waited 10 mins and refitted,

headlight and blower still work but no dash lights??

any idea whats happened??


also i only seem to have some functions of the mfa working and no gear change light

car is a 1983 gti campaign

best to just take the dash out and check all the loom end to end, trouble with loom fires is it could have damaged other random wires when it burnt out

I had a mishap when i tidied up my wiring, the cig lighter illumination bulb holder came adrift and it was only when i put the lights on that the smoke came,on my caddy this is off the blower fuse (20amp) so the wiring melted instead of blowing, check gray/yellow wire from h/light switch mine burnt back to fuse board.
