S1 Electric problems! Indicators etc

Hey folks,
Picking up a '79 Series 1 Golf L this weekend hopefully, trailering it back though!
Prior to a recent body work overhaul, it's been sat, the indicators, & hazards don't work.
I haven't had time to do any fault finding, but the fuses are A-ok apparently.

Is it a case of removing the hazard switch and cleaning terminals?
Would it be the flasher unit?
How would I go about cleaning/checking terminals etc on the indicator stalk?

Cheers,
Alex

you will have to check the relay mate, switch or indicator stalks could also be at fault including the wiring.

The question is, can you use a multimeter?

I have a multimeter, use it? I hope so ;)

What should I be checking? I've done fault finding on my spaghetti style wiring in my Beetle, so i'm not a multimeter virgin!

I know this is a stupid question, but besides changing the relay, how else can I check it?

Cheers,
Alex

i think it will be the relay as both the indicators (which could be stalk) and hazzards(could be switch) but as both have gone id say relay, if it was one or the other i would still start on relay

well its not that simple as they both use the same wiring mate.  the indicators are wired through the hazzard switch to the fusebox.

your best off just replacing the relay first unless you fancy cracking the haynes out with a multimeter?

sorry mate, new to Golfs, but only going on military land rover etc, and basic electrical principals, ive got a haynes so if poster is stuck i can help, but its nothing compared to knowledge of the MK1 that you have, still bet a a good beer its the relay lol

Right, apparently the hazzards work, and the fuses are fine..
I've bought a relay to test on Friday, besides that, is it a case of taking off the steering wheel, changing the indicator stalk, and then seeing?

Alex

well theres no point in TTT if you havent put any more information on!

you say the hazards work, then the relay is fine and you need to be looking at the wiring from the hazard switch and the stalks them selfs.

open your haynes and start doing continuity tests on the wires in question and checking for voltages where applicable.  I don't have a haynes with me so I can't tell you what wires but if you look it will be obvious on the circuit diagram.  Aside from that mate I can't help you any more

No worries, thank you for your help, i'll have a gander in the haynes when I get it in the post this week, just wondered if it my updated reply shed some light on a common fix.

Much appreciated,
Al

Narrowed it down to a faulty hazzard switch :) Just waiting on some bits i'm getting with the paycheck on the 28th off here, and I can crack on with it again!
