You may find that the connector on the bottom right of the clocks is loose, or worn, or the contacts on the flexible circuit board have worn down and aren't making a decent circuit.

Here's  how you get to the clocks themselves.

Post up some pics of what you find, and people will be able to help. Also, it'd be useful to post what engine and model you've got ;)

Try to remember which screws came from where as there are over half a dozen you'll have to undo and there are a few different lengths and if you get them mixed up it wont screw back together as well or screws will protrude.

From memory the different sets are:
ones that hold the clocks onto the metal frame behind dash
ones that screw roof of the clocks into underside of dash (make sure these top holes in clocks line up with the metal clamps on dash when you put it back in)
ones that hold the rest of the dash surround in place

Hopefully it'll save you having to take it apart again after reassembly like i did.

oh yeah forgot to mention I had this exact same problem in an 83 driver so slightly different clocks.

The advice i found on here was:
Check grounds with multimeter, it earths to the side of the engine block on small block cars, not sure on gti. I found another tip on here for this problem which suggested drilling a hole into the bulkhead behind the dash and screwing an extra ground wire in. Tried it, didnt do any harm but didnt work for me either!
Check multiplug isnt damaged as previously mentioned.
Check wires arent burnt out, missing or loose.
Check cirucuit board isnt ripped/damaged.
Check voltage stabiliser, its a black chip thing on the side of the clocks which has 3 prongs plugging into the circuit board. Centre prong is earth, with a multimeter you should get ~12v between earth and one of the other prongs, and ~10v between earth and the other.

Sadly i did all that but never got to the bottom of my problem and had to resort to a new set of clocks but it did the trick.
