Rocker Cover Earth Cable

Just wonderered where the earth on the rocker cover goes.
Mine attaches itself to the bulkhead to the back of the engine bay.

My MFA display is blank and reading through numerous threads its says this earth cable is a common problem?

The question is should it be attatched strainght to the bulkhead or go into a wiring loom somewhere?

it earths to where the coil joins the bulkhead. However there are mixed posts on whether having rocker cover earthed at all makes any difference. Mine isn't and I have no probs with mfa etc.  :dontknow:

Thankyou.

Im at a loss with whole MFA issue lol.
I had no dash light or mfa display at first.
Now have dash lights and all the bulbs on the dash work (indicators full beam oil battery etc)
just a blank mfa display not even the clock

Mine bolts directly to the engine bay from the rocker cover not into any coils etc

I'm not running any earth to the top of the rocker cover, not sure this this cable has any use really.
I have more gremlins with the instruments than I care to mention, But I'm sure they earth back to the fusebox and the battery….

if fitted the cable goes from head to one of the coil mounting bolts. since vw fitted it to the mk2 from the factory, then its a good plan to have one ;)

I assume the reason is you might not get a great earth path to the head since it would have to pass thru the aluminium, to the head bolts (which are coated) or thru the engine fire rings, since the head gasket is fibre

Fair point John, Guess it does serve some role, but they are often broken and cars seem to run without them.

I think the coil mounting bolt is the mearest earth point to the rocker cover, well that is if your coil is actually still mounted there

yeah this is true, the mk1s mostly never had this. but vw must have realised its not so great so added it for the mk2 :)

certainly isnt a bad thing, you cant have too many earths!
