Reversing / MPG gearbox switch.

Hi,

It may already be common knowledge but after receiving the wrong (later 5 pin) multiplug switch and then being told my 4 pin version is obsolete by VW, GSF, Partco and a few other indipendents, i went about cannibalising this new plug to repair my old one. Its not easy as the later types appear to be moulded and i had to hacksaw through it! Anyway, my switch had two broken springs and one corroded pin which i replaced with parts from the new one so just to let those in the same situation not to panic as it is do-able!

 Have a good weekend chaps,

   Rob.

Do you need one of these for your MFA to indicate MPG etc?  My 88 GTi  Cabby only has a two pin plug, and I do not see any additional unconnected wires in that area?

And Remember, Big Smile!!  Biiiig Smile!!!

I'm not sure about the later cabby models, my one is a black multi plug about 35mm x 15mm x 20mm (ish) and contains two switches, one is for the reversing light and the other is made when 5th gear is engaged. This unit sits on the side of the gearbox. As soon as you put it in 5th, the analogue MPG needle will start to sweep accross, dropping out of sight when you change down. The digital MPG readings (AFAIK) do not need to see this switch and are unnafected if it's broken. The switch i bought off of ebay was phisically the same size but had 5 pins instead of my 4.

 Cheers,
