Replacement fuse panel connector

Hi everyone just joined the site. I own a '82 1.8 GTI and was enjoying the dream until a long wait on the hard shoulder of the M6.

I managed to pin point the problem to a lack of power to the fuel pump. Tracing the wires back to the connector on the fuse pnl the plug wasn't in the best condition. There were alot of pins corroded and the temp on one of the wires had started melting the insulation.

As a newcomer to the scene I was lookin for a bit of advice. I'm presuming the connectors aren't made any more so how do I get my hands on another one? I'd like to re-terminate the existing wires but don't know how to get the same pins and whether its a special tool to crimp them. Suppose the other option is to try find a second-hand plug with the wires still inserted and simply splice the the existing loom. Ideally the idea of re-terminating will look far better but how practical is it nowadays?

Really appreciate any advice or contacts for sourcing parts. Hope everyone has a good wkend!

try your local auto electrical place. (yellow pages) they should help you.

but if one of the wires is getting hot and melting the insulation there must be a fault some where, sort that out first.

Cheers for the reply, the corrosion on the high temp wire was shocking. When trying to clean it up most of it fell to bits. Which I'm presuming would cause the wire to get hotter.

I'll dive into the Yellow Pages, thought the connector might be a more specialist VW part rather than a widely used standard item

Thanks for the help

lack of power to the fuel pump is usually the fuel pump relay at fault you can test this by using some wire to form a jumper across the large holes when you take out the relay. do this just to test the relay when ignition is turned on and you should hear the pump prime up.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

wire shouldn't get hot even without the plastic on it. but a faulty relay could cause it to get hot. as asopy says
