Relocate Power Roof Switch

Hi,

I am thinking of installing 3 VDO gauges into the centre console of a 1993 GTi Convertible. The power roof switch currently sits in the position and after any advice on good alternative locations on the dash for the switch that has worked for any others and looks the part.

Cheers,

Del

personly i thougt roof switchs where mounted down by the gear lever gaiter could be wrong or dreaming it, if i am right perhaps the centre consol is in correct for the car, or the power hood is not standard

You are right that the VDO gauges don't appear to be standard for the Sportline and the lower centre console is where the roof switch currently lives with 2 blanks either side for the optional extras for electric windows. Having seen other cabbys some have the gauges as optional extras and would make good use of the space. It is an idea I have been toying with as have some decent used gauges (volt, oil pressure and temp) as long as I could move the roof switch that still gives it a natural look. Was wondering whether anybody else had done anything similar?

the short answer is you cant have factory hood/window switches and also vdo gauges in the car at the same time, as they're fighting over the same holes!

what you coudl do though is move the switches to the doors using corrado switch holders mounted in the doorcard, or somewhere else that is convenient.

Thanks John,

I was thinking of mounting it somewhere knee height on the dash and you've certainly given me an alternative idea I hadn't considered.

Can't find a pic but I have seen a few cabbys with the panel that has the roof & wondow switches relocated to where the ash tray is. Then you can put your VDO gages in the centre consol.

Many moons ago I made a panel to do the opposite. I had 2 VDO gauges, out of a Calibra, where the ash tray goes and kept the window & roof switches where they were.

Let me just add, this was about 4 years ago and I have since seen the light and taken it all out.    :redfaced:

I know where you are coming from mate. I'm torn at the moment in keeping it as is but like the idea of the gauges and making the most out of the space as it only houses the one switch with 2 blanks either side as it did not have the optional electric windows fitted.

the knee bar is a possibility but its all metal behind so would be a bit of a mare i recon! i think the ashtray pannel would be better as no-one should be allowed to smoke in the precious ;)

oh i forgot to say, the corrado window loom woudl make moving the switches to the doors easier as its already designed to go there! it fits the same as long as you get an early one from a car with the same switches as yours. i actually had a corrado loom in my cabby, as finding a corrado loom was way easier than a proper cabrio loom!

it routes a bit differently but it fits fine. i had a load of slack wire bundled up behind the console as i had my switches in there rather than the doors

Well I went ahead with it and thought I would update with the results. I decided on mounting it in one of the blank switches on the side of the dash moving the hazard lights up one slot, which fitted well without extending the wiring.

I'm pleased with the result and the use of the space where two blank switches looked a little bare before. It also leaves an option of reversing it without having had to cut a hole in the dash.
