check the connections in the engine bay, sounds like you have put the wrong connector on the gearbox switch :-)

could just be the plug on the back lights too, they always corroed something rotten. for weeks mine would periodically flash the brake lights when i went over bumps!

quick rub on the contacts with some emery and a bit of contact oil and it's been fine since.

Stop and tail buld (i.e Brakes and Tail light) should have 2 pins on it (3 if you included the outer casing) take it out make sure its the right way round. It will also fit in the wrong way round (although not very well) so check for that too.

Also check the earth/connector block for corrosion.

brake lights are controlled from a pressure switch on the master cylinder.
reverse light is controlled from a switch on the gearbox (about 4" away)

first check is as stated above.
after that it is very difficult to cross wire the plug on the lights or the actual light board. but well worth a check.
the lights earth in the boot (passenger side) check this earth is clean and free from scum undue the earthing point and clean all the contacts..
this is normally due to a faulty earth connection (hence you see fords driving round with indicators that act like brake lights and brake lights that act like indicators.
