Rear fog light on cabriolet inactive ?????

Hi everyone, hope some one has had this problem so that I can get to the bottom of it. Rear fog light does not work at all. The switch has been changed, new 10A fuse and the bulb unit at the rear works when tested of the battery. I'v followed the manual to operate the light so its not for that reason either. Anyone????????????? Also the light in the switch does not illuminate either. Could this problem be down to a recently changed wiper/washer stalk?

get some sand paper and clean the actual terminals up where the bulb contacts. I have had this on both of my cabbies. Worth a try.

Mine was the same and the earth wasn't connected if I remember right, my mate noticed and attached it and bingo.

For anybody interested the reason why the fog didn't work was down to a new wiper/washer stalk from GSF unfortunately it didn't cut it even though it was identical with the exception of the mpg computer but the fog still works without the computer plugged in. I really hope this is also the cause of no power going to the external pump fingers crossed.

External pump?
Fuel pump I pressume?

usually fuse 5 realy position 2. Common problem failed and dirty connectors in the fuse box and the relay terminals.
So a good clean up.
Pressume this is a GTI car what year as there was a 5 pin relay that takes a signal from the coil also on later cabrio's.

Does the in tank lift pump work? as you have 2 on later GTI. One in the tank under the rear seat and another under the body. The in tank was added, because some cars when cornering etc ended up with fuel starvation.
Another prob is rust in the tank from the filler neck clogging the inlet strainer gauze on the pump causing it to fail. Also make sure the fuel filter is clean in the engine bay.

Hey chortle. Thanks for the reply, I did put a post on the pump issue but had no reply's. Its E reg 88. Yer that's right the external fuel pump on the gti. The in tank pump sender unit is working, its pumping fuel out of the tank but there seems to be no power going to the external pump. Iv tested the pump off the battery and its working. The fuse in 5 is fine and the relay 2 is switching for the in tank pump (ignition on). Does the position 2 relay also control the external one when cranking? I stripped the fuse box today to check the E Harness and the fuel pump wire seems fine I have noticed that the relay listed as gear change up indicator display in the position 4 is totally wrecked but it must have been for awhile as the mess on it!! no metal inside just brown dust. Gear change up indicator display??? do you know what this is?

At last the pump is working who ever has had the car before me should be shot at point black range after the mess they have done with the wiring at the rear of the fuse box black tape, scotch locks and really dodgy soldering on at least 6 components. I unraveled all the tape and repaired the connections and all is good thank god.
