i recently fitted a new head unit into my mk1 1983 gti and for some reason there is no power going to the radio or cig lighter now i have checked the fuses and none are blown are there any othere reasons this would happen and is there another live wire i could use for my stereo ??

Hi

If you remove the ash tray you will see a small loom to the cigarette lighter and illumination it plugs into the main wiring loom a bit further into the dash. You may find a piece of foam rubber around it make sure it hasnt come apart. From memory i think this also supplies the feed to the radio.

I don't think there is a permanent live, I think you need a switched live and a permanent.
Not 100% on this though.

mk1s should have a 12v and earth as standard, but no switched live unless its a late model cabby. if fuse isnt blown you need to look behind the dash at your wiring. take out the dash undertrays and console and get searching! just be thankfull its not a cabrio, those are a right pain due to the knee bar
