Power to the fuel pump

Hello..

When does power come on to the fuel pump, when ignition is turned on ? My 1980 GTI died on me the other day, there was right before, some cutting out or misfire, and then nothing more? I now have tested the fuel pump out of the car, and it spins nicely? But there is not coming power to the pump when I turn the key to ignition?  I have read on this great forum, that it is possible to test if the relay is damaged, but I don?t have any relay that have 2 wide spades, there is one small, and the rest I the same size?

This is the kind of relay i can find..??

When the engine is cold, I am able to start it, but I only turns for a short time, maybe about 10 sek.

Do this car have a liftpump in the fueltank also..?

Regards..

Christian

Bridge the relay with 2 male spades, heavy duty switch and 8A fuse to test the pump.

There are no lift pumps in any GTi hatchback

the 2 largest terminals :)
not all fuel pump relays make the pump run for a few seconds with ignition, but it should always run the pump when the engien is turning over on the starter motor. some relays have a fuse built in for the pump, so start there.

My GTI K-Jet is still causing trouble, there is not coming any power to the fuel pump, and i have replaced the relay, and the fuel pump is brand new, so that should not be the problem…

Where does the signal to the relay come from, ign, coil or the rewcounter.. The pump is running if I bridge the to large terminals, but there comes no power to it when I crank the engine…

Is it possible to measure if the signal is present in any way ??

And does the MK1 have any other known problems that could cause the lag of power to the pump ??

it requires a rev counter signal to work, as well as an ign live. there are a couple different relays for the MK1, plus also larter MK2 relays are different again. i suspect you have the wrong relay for your application, or perhaps the ign live or rev feed is missing.  does your rev counter work? also if you have a seperate relay socket above the fusebox for the pump relay, follow the black and the brown wires back, make sure they are connected securely
