power hood motor

hi guys, have a mk1 with electric hood, it has been getting slower and slower over the last few years, but this year, it kept on stopping when going up and down, would move a little bit, then stop, leave it for a while, then stop again. i got somebody to do the button while i checked the motor, and discovered the motor actually smoked before stopping working. again leaving it for 20 seconds or so and trying again produced the same results. i have seen on here that the roof can be operated manually by, i assume, loosening off the key thingy on the resevoir, but i like having an electric hood!!! lol. anybody got any ideas on whether i definately need a new motor for it or if it might be something hopefully cheaper and easier to fix? failing that, anyone know where i cant get a new motor from??

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? You can see hi-low marks on the lower end of the pump.

Good luck, JJ

hood motor and rams are behind the boot side cards. the pumps suffer from cracked impeller wheels, there was a kit out somewhere which you could use to fix them iirc

Hello, I have the same problem on my sportline, its as if the motor runs out of steam halfway up. i am guessing its the fluid but i cant fathom out how to top it up. Has anyone got an idiots guide please with oil capacity etc.

You get vw hydraulic fluid which if I remember is the same as the power steering fluid ( double check this ) and with the roof fully open check the level on the pump resevoir, if it needs topped up as it is not between the max and min lines then undo the hex bolt on the top face of the pump and with a tiny funnel or bottle top up to the required level.

I am no expert but I am sure I am correct  :)

Just done it - works a treat. I just couldnt find the filler before  :(  Though it looks like the old oil is contaminated so i will have to drain it off sometime.
cheers Ian
