Oil Pressure Gauge Problem. Really Confused! HELP!!!!!!!

I have the VDO oil pressure gauge fitted, and according to the previous owner, he had to disconnect the oil gauge thing on the instuments.

The pressure on the gauge is fine on start up and will do exactly what it should, but then 2 miles into the journey, the buzzer ( :banghead: ) goes on, and the oil pressure VDO starts to read 1 bar or 0 bars for the rest of the journey and the buzzer never goes off!

Now, I am going to investigate the oil filter, and check the connections, but some advice as to location of these places and exactly what i should be doing/ looking out for would be so helpful!

Please dont let me drive another journey with that buzzer, I dont want  it to be my cars soundtrack!

Here are some pictures that you can edit to help me,   .

Thankyou, Andrew

I've been trying to fix the problem all day but still no results.  I took the sender off the head and cleaned it, and then it went off the scale when I re-attached it?  :dontknow:  And then I took it off again and it went back to zero on the scale.

I noticed that there is alot of oil coming our onto a sender ontop of the cam-cover.  Could this be the problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

hello, just compared mine (but i have no vdo gauges)
blue wire connected to top of oil filter
green wire connected to plate near fan housing
brown wire connected to near water hose going to head
yellow wire to sender unit on the side of the head.
is the green wire , with yellow tape  in the picture connected ?

no, it has yellow tape over it. I just found it today, I have no idea where it came from.

The car seems to have all brown electrical wires.  Not sure if the VDO were on the car from new, or if were put on by a previous owner.  Also there is a new horn so that wire may be surplus from the horn?

Thanks, Andrew

sounds like previous owner fitting, do all mfa functions work? wire taped up should be connected plate near fan housing, have you asked previous owner if he has any idea?

the oil gauge under the speedo doesn't work.  The MFA functions appear to work, but the MPG is definately not working right. (average 5 mpg)

Not too sure where the yellow taped up sensor should connect to. Just had a look and there is no obvious place.

Could is be that the oil pressure earth is not functioning properly when getting covered in oil?

green wire taped up would normaly fit where the brown wire is now on the oil filter housing nearest radiater fan housing. check your pm

Which sender goes to which instrument? Does the sender of the oil filter go to the VDO and then sender on the head go to the MFA buzzer and light?

Why do I still have that green wire? Any ideas?  I'm trying to cure the buzzer you see.

No PM BTW.

I did connect that green wire to the oil filter housing, and then had a look at the VDO gauge (from standstill-still cold) and it read off the scale (>5bar).

 :dontknow:  :banghead:

Can anybody give me adefinative answer as to what the oil pressure should be at 2000rpm, 2500rpm, 3000rpm, and then as the oil warms up etc?

Mine has Audi 5 bar guage fitted. Cold its at MAX all the time. Even when hot at those revs it will be showing high/max readings. My engine's been rebuilt and done @15K miles. An older engine would show lower readings.

Think the oil pressure switchs are rated at 0.3 and 1.8bar so VW think it should be doing atleast 1.8 bar at 2000rpm (to stop the buzzer warning)

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

okay thanks, early1800. I am going to take it into VW tomorrow and try and get them to tell me what is wrong.

There are so many things that it could be and I have no idea to where to start?  :dontknow:

Thanks again, Andrew
