Yes. Tis is a common problem with the 16V engine as it gets older. The seal on the distributor shaft starts to go bad and lets oil in from the cylinder head. Causes a miss at best and can even cause it to not run. Even with a Hall sender, points would be much worse. Problem is the seal is not a replacement part and just like the 16V engine, you have to determine the seal size and buy it from a non-VW source.

you get the seal in a head gasket kit.

here is a how2 I saved from another forum, I did the same on my dizzy and the seal from simply bearings did the trick. I used the type with the dust seal as well :)

Ok, some progress. Got the pin out and took apart the distributor. Used a
punch slightly smaller then the hole through the cog at the end and gave it a
good smack.

Then laid out all the parts, there are some washers that are like Dremel
cutting discs. Does anyone know what type of washer that is one, if not both
need replacing.

Then the second hardest bit was removing the washer in the lip on the other
side with covers the oil seal. As you can see from the pic (middle item) it has
a serrated edge and is quite soft. I gently knocked it out from the other side.
And the seal at the bottom, didn't look too bad but leaked alot so…

Then the shaft. Looks like there is a groove where the seal should sit about
5mm up from the bottom. Gonna clean this up before refitting.

The size i have gone for is indeed 12x19x5 and most places start 12.5mm x
22mm not 19 so it would be too big. I got some with a dust seal (left, you can
just make out the lip on the inside) and some normal seals. Got them from Simply Bearings, very good
service. Next day delivery and flat rate of postage of ?1.25!

Then i gently knocked it into the distributor, making sure not to go down too
far. I check with the shaft to make sure the oil seal lip 'clicked' with the
mark on the shaft to seal.

No. The seals for distributors are not replacement parts sold by the dealer or in service kits. The distributors are intended as replacement parts, i.e. give them your bad one when you purchase a rebuilt one. Most call it a core and there will be a core charge if you don't have the old one.

You need to measure the shaft and old seal, I don't know the size of a 1.1L distributor shaft or seal, and take that to a company who sells seals. The important sizes are the shaft, the out side diameter and the thickness.

yep as grimeyfingers says, the seal in the kit you're thinkign of is the one around the outside of the dizzy base, not the internal seal.

The measurements of the internal seal are 12x19x5

hi

i know its an old thread, just thought someone could clear something up for me.

Ive got the dizzy apart with the seal out, theres only 1 seal isn't there? the other 2 pieces that the shaft goes onto are just acting as bearing? Is this correct?

Also is there an oil seal or gasket for the housing the dizzy bolts into, im not sure what its called but its the part that is fixed into the head?

Thanks

thanks rubjonny

another quick one, the part that the end of the dizzy shaft sits into on the engine side has oil sat in there. Is oil supposed to be able to get in there or is there another seal further back?

Thanks

do you mean the bit with the 2 pegs that locates in the end of the camshaft? if so yeah oil will get there as its open to the head. this is why we need to replace this oil seal :)
there is another big oil seal round the outside of the dizzy that stops oil getting past the edge of the dizzy :)

Thanks, yeh that's the bit I meant.

I've got oil in that bit but it's getting into the dizzy cap aswel.

The bigger oil seal is more like an o ring isn't it? Is that the one your meaning?

Thanks again

yeah the small green seal in the pics above is what stops oil getting past the peg bit inside the dizzy, the larger green one goes round the outside of the dizzy base and is just a massive o'ring :)
