sounds like accumulator which is next to high pressure pump, accumulator as well as smoothing out fuel flow to metering head also holds residual pressure in system to prevent fuel vapuorizing in the injector line when engine is warm

does it start ok cold but takes loads of cranking when engine is warm?

really you need a set of guages to see what residual pressure is and if its falling off too quickly

accumulator is from my tin top that car had no probs running wise, the cabby starts from cold everytime and runs fine, until its left for any length of time, ive cranked it for a min none stop and it wont go until i crack the 14mm banjo :banghead: and again :banghead: i noticed today once it eventualy started it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders then built up to 4,do you not think it could be the metering unit?

there is no way to tell for definite what it is until you get some guages on there.
if you have a spare known to be good metering unit then try it, but just because the accumulator worked fine on your tintop, whats to say it now hasnt failed?

if the car runs fine other than this hot start issue then i cant see it being m/head, the hot start issue on my 16v was caused by the accumulator but it would eventually start after lots of cranking and foot hard down, then run on 3cyl and then steady idle, if i left it off for 5-10 mins when warm it started fine, but any longer it was a pig

if the fuel vapourizes in the lines then surely it would leave a vacuum in the lines and by cracking the banjo your releasing the vacuum and allowing fuel to flow?

was the accumulator an original item on your tintop? how old is it?

do a search for hot start issue

I have a similar problem, Starts first time when cold, but when engine is warm it takes a good few turns to start. I have been told this is down to the injectors dribbling and causing the engine to flood???

Give it a go but it could be a number of things!

have a good metering unit (tintop) so will give that ago tomorrow, the accumulator is approx 10 years old have the paperwork for it somewhere, when i had my 16 valve i had the same prob having to crank it for a while to start that was down to the accumulator then i fitted mine from the tintop and all was fine thats why im sure its not the accumulator, thanks for your help matey ill let you know how i get on,my poor tintops now become a spare parts car  will have to start buying new parts.

which points to accumulator, i know i keep on about it but its an intregal part to k jet btw you are  making assumptions about it which is never a good way to go about fault finding anything

fault finding= test first and replace where faulty never assume that something working 1 minute is working perfectly the next!

10yo acumulator?

youve ruled out leaking injectors

at the minute your making guesses, dont, test system

bottom line is, is the system holding the correct pressures? fuel pressure is critical to mechanical fuel injection

can also be down to non-return valve in the pump itself, its where the banjo attaches. you'll notice it has a hex fitting, you can unscrew it and replace. MK2 k-jet one fits if you have a proper bosch fuel pump.  also make sure you dont have any leaks in your fuel lines.

if you find no fuel comes out while you're cranking it with the wur pipe off for a bit, then thats almost deffo down to an airlock in the system or some kind of fuel delivery problem.

as already saiud, your best bet is to get some k-jet fuel pressure gauges, this will tell you exactly what the issue is. without this you can spend a lot of time and money guessing at which item is at fault!
