does it start ok cold but takes loads of cranking when engine is warm?
really you need a set of guages to see what residual pressure is and if its falling off too quickly

if you have a spare known to be good metering unit then try it, but just because the accumulator worked fine on your tintop, whats to say it now hasnt failed?
if the car runs fine other than this hot start issue then i cant see it being m/head, the hot start issue on my 16v was caused by the accumulator but it would eventually start after lots of cranking and foot hard down, then run on 3cyl and then steady idle, if i left it off for 5-10 mins when warm it started fine, but any longer it was a pig
if the fuel vapourizes in the lines then surely it would leave a vacuum in the lines and by cracking the banjo your releasing the vacuum and allowing fuel to flow?
was the accumulator an original item on your tintop? how old is it?
do a search for hot start issue

ive got no fuel at the injectors until i crack the banjo then hey presto,GazzaBangor said
I have a similar problem, Starts first time when cold, but when engine is warm it takes a good few turns to start. I have been told this is down to the injectors dribbling and causing the engine to flood???

fault finding= test first and replace where faulty never assume that something working 1 minute is working perfectly the next!
10yo acumulator?
youve ruled out leaking injectors
at the minute your making guesses, dont, test system
bottom line is, is the system holding the correct pressures? fuel pressure is critical to mechanical fuel injection

if you find no fuel comes out while you're cranking it with the wur pipe off for a bit, then thats almost deffo down to an airlock in the system or some kind of fuel delivery problem.
as already saiud, your best bet is to get some k-jet fuel pressure gauges, this will tell you exactly what the issue is. without this you can spend a lot of time and money guessing at which item is at fault!
