Not Your Usual Horn Toubles?

'83 Golf Driver 1.3

As in the description, am having trouble with the horn on my 83 Golf Driver 1.3.

Now I've checked the forum and found a whole host of helpful information and have done the following already;

blown fuse - checked all fuses and none blown.
faulty earth strap from steering column to body - haven't been able to remove it and clean it up but have tested it with a DMM to earth and the battery and get continuity each time so it seems fine.
damaged/faulty copper 'o' ring and/or spring contact - both if great condition and seem to be making good contact..

I have also tested the spring contact to steering column but do not get continuity. Leading me to think that the steering column earth is faulty but as I've said I have tested the earth strap and seems fine. Any ideas??

My only other thought is that the horn circuit must have a relay which maybe missing on my fuse box…it's a single horn on a basic driver model so can anyone shed any light on A) if it has a relay? And B) which position on the board this relay should take?

Many thanks in advance!

Andy

Not sure if non-two tone GTI style single horns have a relay or not. But have you actually tried the horn off the car connected direct to the battery.

I'd still clean up and re-do the earth.

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I can't seem to find anything saying non-twin tone horns did have relays.

I will be cleaning up the earth strap and connections anyway as that's all I can think it would be if the horn doesn't work when I short the spring contact to the steering column.

Yep, shorted the negative side of the horn to earth and it certainly works!!

if its got a weedy horn there is no relay, but nothing stopping you from popping one in the socket will have a metal bridge piece in there bin that and fit a 53 relay or std 4 pin automotive switched relay.

once thats in you should heart the relay click when you press the horn or short the contact tab to the column, if not then either the column earth is bad, stalks knackered or the horn wire to it.

horn button wire is brown/blue so check that out. if you have a test bulb give it a live and earth the other leg to the column see if it lights up

Cheers will give that a go. Will have a good look at the earth strap and probably replace it when I can.

Will post back when I get some results!!

Not sure if anyone will read this seeing as its an old post, but finally got to the bottom of the horn problem....turned out to be a burnt out current track in the fuse box. This made up the circuit from the horn push to the horn. Took a while to find!!
