No dipped beam...

Other lights are ok. Sidelights works. Main beam works. Checked bulbs by wiring directly to battery. OK. Tried a new switch in the dash... no differnece. Tried a new column stalk... Not working. Have an uprated loom running directly from the battery and two relays. Still had the same problem if put the old loom back into place. Really bugging me now. Please HELP!

I had a really odd problem with lights when the brown and white earth wire for the dash came off the rocker cover. The main beam light was on all the time when I turned the lights on and I think the headlights themselves misbehaved but I'm not totally sure on that. Although I also had the revcounter die and fuel gauge go to max as well!

Maybe your problem, or maybe not.

Have you checked for voltage anwhere with a multimeter to see how far the power gets?

I've had problems with the headlights and the most recent fix was to clean the contacts in the fusebox and the fuse. Although it wasn't blown, it was dirty, and a check with the voltmeter revealed that the electricity wasn't flowing. Another fault could be the connector at the back of the fuse box.

Both lamps work on different coloured cable from the fuze box , so it points to A the fuze box and or the relay for them or the switch ? Drop the fuze board and check that you have 12volts at the relay , sometimes its as simple as a wire fallen off the back .

Copied from an old post , wiring colours may help ………

This has its own fuse check again in the fuse box . And its own relay but i think it runs all the high beams but is worth checking anyway . If not you want to be looking -and you have swopped the bulbs to the other side?? to check - in the fuse box . From memory lights use white and yellow cable one side [high and low beam ] and yellow/black with white/black cable the other . Yellow is high beam and white low . You have to check if 12 volts is there if not its off to the fuse box you go ….to find out why

Well… After getting my head around the haynes electrical diagrams I started working my way from the dash switch to the fuse box. All ok. Checked the stalk switch. Was switching voltages from one poin to the other. Then shorted the plugs from the back of the fuse box. Main beam ok. Dipped beam working at last! Checked fuses. All ok so it turns out to be a broken wire somewhere between connector A19 and the headlamp multi-socket. Run my own wire and now is working fine! :D

Only downside… 8O

Do vw still sell these? Don't fancy having a fire in there…

Thanks for your help all…
