Mystery flasjing light

I have a 1984 Golf C .  When the ignition is turned on a flshing LED in the middle of the VDO temperature gauge flashes for anything between a few seconds and several minutes.  Can't find any reference in the manual to it.  What is it indicating.

This light indicates either high temp or low water if you have a sensor on the top of the filler bottle.  To show that it is working it should flash for about  5 secs after turning ignition on.  If it keeps flashing there is either a water, temperature problem or a problem with the sensor/guage/wiring.

Thanks for this. We don't have a level sensor so it must be a temperature sensor problem

Is there any other fault that could be associated with this light?

Tried starting my car after a week of standing today but it just fires up and dies again, noticed that light on the temp gauge is constantly flashing and doesnt stop, it never did this before.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

The light doesn't stop flashing until the engine has been running a couple of seconds, so if you can't get it start the light will not cancel.

The circuit that turns this light on and off is in the instruments, and can sometimes give trouble (like the oil pressure buzzer/light circuit).

However, it isn't that unreliable, so you should check the wiring, sender, etc first.

Well i got the car started fine, but the light comes on intermittently while driving. Itl start flashing for a about 20-30 seconds every so often then turn off.

The temperature gauage is working fine and reading normal, all other lights on the instrument panel are fine too.
