my indicators are, as the germans say, kaput!!

Hello,

My indicators aren't working.

I'm pretty sure they've shorted out somewhere but i don't know where, there was a bit of corrosion on the nearside rear light cluster but i've cleaned that up. My hazards work but they the indicators don't work speratly, the indicator light on the dash stays on permanently. Whats got me confused is, the old owner took the golf to poland when he had it with a trailer on the back, therefore there's some very imaginative wiring, to say the least, for the rear lights.

Any ideas on what to do??

Thanks in advance

check the fuse first, I had this problem and only had a quick scan of the fuses and though they all looked ok, so was causing me a real headache, after a much closer inspection I found the blown fuse and a swift replacement cured the problem. :D

yeah i've checked all the fuses and they are fine, this problem happened the other day actually but it managed to fix itself, and now its broken again, could it be something to do with the indicator stalk??

Hi loads of old threads on this subject on here…all say the same..Fuse..Realy.. stalk…but check your earths as well and clean up all connections….I spent best part of two days sorting the same fault out!!

Never worked out exactly what the fault was but it all works now…also had a dodgy connection on the 14 pin plug in my dash but no idea if this was part of problem..

Know this dont help much but know how it feels :banghead:

just pulled everything apart, but i'll be honest i didn't really know what i was looking for, there were no loose connections on to the hazard switch and it looked fine, cleaned up the indicator stalk switch bit which i actually managed to make worse infact and i suspect thats the problem, i might as well just change the section if possible, yes that would of been handy crazyquiff but i can't make it down to the berks meet due to this problem, and i can't be bothered to even try and fix it at at the moment……….

I own-up to searching for a solution for the best part of two months. It was only when I read mkIvdub's advice to you to really examine the fuses [4 & 19 ?] & not merely look at them, that I returned to the fuse panel &, voila, there it was, a cunningly disguised blown fuse!

haha well now i know, my philosophy back in the days of gcse german was that if it sounds german, it is german, needless to say may grades reflected this!!

There's been a new developement, the fog lights are permanently on now when ever i switch the lights onto half or full beam, this has made me think that its definitly the indicator stalk section.

Any more thoughts??

success!!!!!!

Changed the indicator switch - no effect, with the new one still on i changed the hazard switch - no effect, then i got angry - no effect, checked my fuses again and the indicator one had blown. What i think happened is, it blew after i first checked them when i was fiddling about with everything, and i'm not going to try and find out which swtich it was as i'm too scared that it'll brake again - pretty useless really

thnaks incredibly helpfull topic, it appears the advise is check check and then check again, i was convinced i had checked them but as a last resort prior to pulling the other cab to pieces, i checked fuse 19, and yes shed blown, that and a couple of weak terminals on the rear tick tocks.
but hceck and double check the fuses
