My dashboards relationship with a fuel pump!HELP

Lo all,

heres a strange one….
I have searched and searched the site but no luck so far, the basics are i think my electrics are up the duff. I fell in love with a 88 clipper, 1.8 gti a few weeks ago so decided to part with my well earned cash.

Now the gremlins decide to have fun in my car!
when i turn my car on the oil light wants attention and flashes for a bit, no problem there but when i turn the lights on, the rev counter dies and the mainbeam/oil light come on (when on dipped lights) when i flick up to full beam all the lights go out on the dash!? :dontknow:

Then as if thats not a problems to get my head around, when i pull up in my drive my fuel pump sings away until i turn the lights off, then it goes quiet??

Any ideas? Im thinking i may get a re wire! Could it be earthing problems??

I feel this is a sign of thinks to come….
Any ideas greatly appreciated

Hi Iaine and welcome!!

Has the car done this since you got it or since doing some work on it??

Could be an earth issue, there should be an earth strap coming off the rear-right valve/rocker cover nut. If its missing all hell can break loose!

Worth checking this for starters

Cheers
Andy

Certainly could be an earting problem of some sort. I recently had an issue where my wipers would come on every time i indicated right  8O  thatt turned out to be a dodgey earth on the right hand front of the car, which was shared with the washer pump. Obviously when I indicated right, the indicator circuit was trying to earth through the washerpump, which registered just enough current to trigger the wiper relay!

Took me several hours of experimenting to find and solve that one, works perfectly now though!  Just goes to show what weird things can be caused by having a duff earth!!

Ok checked the earth lead on the rocker cover now im home from work but its connected fine, gave it a clean and re attached it.

Any ideas just how many earthing leads there are to do with the front end? Any help would save me a whole day of looking,
cheers all
