Mk3 POLO indiactor problem

Hi all, sorry to bust in with a problem for a polo, but seems we are all VAG loversI thought you guys might be able to help.

The indicators on my Mk3 polo do not work. Here are the symptoms!

When turning the ignition on the green indicator LED on the dash stays on but very dimly. (is that a word?!)
It stays on like this when I start the engine.

When I turn on the indicator (left or right) the indicator does not function at all. but the light on the dash stays on but now as bright as normal.

The hazards work fine.

I have tried the relay, I have even swapped it with another identical relay with the same results. I have looked all under the dash to find any loose connesctions. I have checked all the fuses (the only one blown is the fag lighter but i did that)

Please help as I am totally stumped and I need the car first thing to go to work.

Any ideas?
