mk1 original radio/cass removal

having a little difficulty, there arnet any removal points or holes that i can see, it just seems stuck in. i can get a knife blade around it but its not moving it! if it worked id consider keeping it in as an original item, but seeing as it doesnt its coming out! anyone done this? help greatly appreciated. oh and do u need an adaptor for a new head unit? mk mk2's didnt but this looks a little different.

Had same problem with the radio fitted in my golf. I removed the dash face to get to the rear and pushed the clips in by hand did the trick.

Most of the older radios have a separate face plate. Try pulling the two volume and tuning knobs off then you should see some nuts and washers holding the face plate on. Take the face plate off and you should see some spring clips on the side that need pulling in with a screwdriver. Then pull the radio out. You should not need an adapter, but some radios have a separate cage to secure them.

Hi thanks guys, yeah i figured how to get it out, the way dubboy said, there were two locking nuts behing the nobs, which released the faceplate, then it slid out when the clips were compressed. another problem now! the wireing, there are two plugs for the speakers, two for power, an ariel, and another which looks like earth. this is completely different to the mk2! , which had a large block full of wires which plugged together. what goes where!?! iv rooted around for this block behind the dash but i cant find it. is there one atall? or do i some how have to connect the wires mentioned above to my new head unit? which dont look like they will! help needed!

the haynes manual will help, but from memory theres brown-earth and red is live. yellow is for the speed sensor which raises the volume when going faster…not used with after market radios.

There is no switched live so you may need to take a wire off the heater fan if your radio needs it.

There are a couple of threads on this, try a few searches.
