MK1 Cabrio - Battery Help

Hi, quick question if anyone can help. Im struggling to find a definite answer from various people i have rang regarding what is the best battery for my golf.

Its a mk 1 cabrio with electric roof and 1.8 engine. The problem with the current battery is that it dosent seem to hold charge since its been fitted.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

you say not holding charge, is the batt new? are you driving car when it goes flat or is the car parked up?

I use one of those Calcium ones from Hallfords, bit expensive but wanted to give it a try and its good.

But if your battery isn't holding charge 1st thing to do is get an ammeter on the battery and see if any load is being drawn (with the car switched off). It could be an alarm or car stereo thats draining it, could also be the alternator.

I have two 'good' batteries that way you can keep one charged and test with the other.

I have the same problem with my 1.8 cab too. The battery keeps draining. I charged it 2 weeks ago and the clock on the dash has already stopped working. I've bought another battery so that I've always got one ready but it's still baffling and annoying..

Could also be damp I guess, have you checked for that?

If you have any electrical problems always do the following 1st

  1. Check earth straps
  2. Check for damp
  3. Check connectors

Its free and easy to check these things and may clear up other problems you have while your at it :)

Had same problem so took it to auto electrican. He said my battery was draining as i had my stereo wired up incorrectly. Basically it was running off a permanent live as opposed to an ignition live and the head unit was remaining live all the time. He said  it was more of a problem as my car  wasn't being used regularly hence the stereo draining  the battery
