mk1 16v earth problem?

Hi all

I have just recently converted my 89 mk1 cabriolet with a 16v kjet.. im having an electrical issue and im ageing very quickly trying to fix it  :banghead:

basically when i turn the ignition on sometimes the fuel pump primes, sometimes it doesnt! sometimes the oil light flashes as expected but sometimes it dont! and i have also noticed the rev counter blip slightly when turning the ignition on.
Finally.. when turning the engine over the fuel pump clicks like f*ck but again not all the time!

Occasionally I can turn the ignition on and start the car with none of the above problems.

Can anyone please help..pleeeeease  :)

Thank you

dan

Quick update:

Checked main earths…. battery, gearbox, chassis leg and head. found the battery had been leaking at the earth terminal and cause corrosion. Replaced baterry, still having problems.

Checked black ignition wire and found a dry solder joint. Repaired this and it seems to have solved the light issues on the dash but im still having problems with the fuel pump not priming every time.

Jasonc, what dash problems are you getting?

the problems im getting are
no dash lights or rev counter ,fuel gauge
its only when i turn the key on and off fast that sometimes thay all work

ive took the dash out and found a green and white wire in the loom that go,s to the clocks burnt all the way down but cant seem to find where it go,s as ive checked all the connectors and nothing visable
maybe an old issue with the car ?

looking on the fuse thread above its the fog light or wiper wire

yeah just seen that.. sounds like the cars had a short at some point in the past.

id try repairing the burnt out wire then trace and test all wires leading to the fuse box.

yeah that would be the best

feeling a bit gutted with it at the mo

dont worry about it too much, just one of those things.. I had loads of electrical problems with mine when i first got it and it ended up being a short in the boot light loom due to an alarm being cut out wrong. drove me insane! Im sure you'll have it sorted soon

would you no if the loom comes in parts ?
as in the part i need it from the fuse box i assume to the dash, clocks ?
or is it 1 complete loom

You can replace just the loom between the clocks and the fuse box (i think) but it would be best to troubleshoot and find the fault first.. you will probably find a fried wire or two which is the cause.
