Mk1 1.8 Cabrio (Auto) Starter Wiring heat protection

I have finally installed a new starter and solenoid but am having problems with the wiring for the solenoid. Can someone advise if the solenoid wire from the starter switch passes under the starter heat-shield from the left side or does it go in thru the hole at the other end of the heat-shield ?

Also what sort of heat insulation should be used on the wire ? I have used 20mm glass tape tubing but even this is burning up as it passes so close to the exhaust manifold ( closest is 6cm from manifold ).

Any advice welcomed !
