Jon,

There is loads of discussion on this in the old forum - most people have problems with fuel consumption on the MFA and the needle economy gauge.

If its just the fuel consumption that doesn't work then check the small rubber vacuum pipe is not pinched / perished or come off the back of the instrument cluster.

I forgot to reconnect mine and get very low MPG readings, but everything else works fine. If this is the problem then the econo-meter thing probably won't work either.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the vacuum pipe isn't pinched as the econometer works perfectly (if you can call it that!) better buy a haynes manual first I think.

Cheers,

Jon.

sorry for butting in.

mines just started doing that reading about 10mpg low. Ive checked the pipe at both ends all looks fine. The econ gauge works fine. Any ideas or do you think it maybe the pipe still ?

the pipe is the most common cause, also the unit on the back of the clocks can give up.

if you have the economy gauge(needle jobby),it means you will have the big type reverse light switch, which the needle gets power from.

these are v prone to going faulty.

you can split the switch and repair them using the little springs you get in a pen. 8)

if your needle gauge is working, you can adjust the gear change light (when it lights up), 8O  8) to become more of a shift light…

Riley is right - I split and repaired one once but didn't need the springs just a good clean of the contacts was enough to get it back to life
