Mfa upshift and econometer wiring

Post

I need help !
I've been tidying up the wiring on my 1.8mk1 gti , just about got everything working as it should now apart from the mfa upshift light ( i'm sure this worked when i fist got the car 20 years ago ) !!and econometer ,( i've never seen this work) i have the wiring and in line switch on the vacum line sorted but it still does not work , also i can'nt find the wiring for the 5 th gear signal on the gearbox , the gearbox has the multi pin switch on top but just has 2 wires for the reverse lights connected direct via spade crimps,( i did this when i swapped the gearbox 15 years ago ) absolutely no sign of any more wires for the 5 th gear signal

Q1, did all 1.8 mk1's need the 5 th gear signal for the econometer ?

Q2, can i wire this myself all the way back to the clocks ? If so what pin on what plug do i need to connect to?

Please help me ! :dry::(

Im sure Rubjonny will add to this but:
1. yes
2. if you bridge the two wires that would have connected to the 5th gear switch the enometer should work all the time, it will not however be very accurate in any gear but 5th.

I cant remember the gearbox codes off the top of my head but the box you swapped out would have been slightly different from the box you refitted, hence nowhere to plug your wires in.

Do it once and do it right! ok, we've identified the problem, lets not make it worse by guessing……… Identifying the sympton is not the same as understanding the cause :)

Thanks matey but the problem is I can'nt for the life of me find the two wires ! I've looked everywhere ! I've got the multiplug in the top of the gearbox
The part of the loom that has the reverse light wires in only has two wires : a black and a blue / black if my memory is correct
I've looked everywhere which makes me wonder did it ever have the fifth gear signal from the box ?

the mfa upshift wires will be part of the engine loom, the reverse wires come from the lighting loom. they're green/white and red/white, have a good look startign from the main grommet in the bulkhead where the engine loom comes thru.  if you have the vacuum switch on the dizzy vac pipe then it did originally have the upshift wiring in it. if not then perhaps not!

Cheers mate, I'll have to have another look , I thought everything was accounted for in the engine loom apart from what looked like a 1mm white or maybe yellow ( a bit discoloured ) can I just ground this to try it ? Or do I need both the green /white and red/white to go through the switch ?

the green/white is for the switch, the red/white is for the vacuum switch :) they both run to the pair of spade connectors on the mfa gearbox plug, but the switch wires obv dont go to the box switch but the vacuum switch

Ok , starting to make sense now , my loom has been messed about with by the previous owner so I don't have the female end of the gearbox multiplug so I'll have to make a loom up my self , just to confirm green/white from gearbox and red/white from vac switch and feed both these switches from ground ?

Found it !! Whoever tossed the wiring up 20 odd years ago before i owned it had connected the green/white which should be from the 5 th gear switch to the oil pressure switch ! And the stray white ish wire which should be going to the oil pressure switch to absolutely naff all ! So now Not only do i have a fully operational mfa but also a oil warning light ! Handy ! Well happy , thanks for your help   ;)

Hi guys! I'm having a hard time locating those wires on my '88 gti cabby. Does anyone have a picture which would help me locate the wire? The reason why I'm asking you this is because English is not my native language, therefore its hard to understand which parts you guys are talking about.

Many thanks! :)

Matas
