MFA (new topic?!)

I know MFA problems are hardly new but….

I've got a 1987 Cabrio GTI

It runs fine, but the MFA and fuel meter/gearchange indicator doesn't work

In the engine compartment there is a plug hanging loose that looks remarkably like the MFA gear indicator plug pictured in the Haynes manual. Only the Manual shows it plugged into the gearbox, (on a scirocco) in a place where there is no socket/connector on my engine.

Is there an alternative socket location hidden away behind the engine/beneath the battery that the socket plugs into? It's on a relatively short lead so there are not that many places it could connect to.

Or is it the plug for some clever diagnostic device (did they have such a thing in 1987  :? )

Ali,

Check your gearbox code (underneath on the edge of the bell housing).  I think the only gearbox that has the plug is the 9A.  If someones changhed your box for a different one it is likely you don't have the plug anymore so the reversing lights and MFA fuel consumprtion indicator will not work.

Actually the first Golfs from '74 have a diagnostic connector mounted on the left front suspension turret!! Was pretty basic though..
