Charge the battery up or buy a new one (the GSF battery is good quality and cost about 30 quid) and the MFA display will work ok, also check the alternator.

Have you taken the fuse out and then put it back in again....sometimes gives it a reset and works then.

The little buttons are for setting the clock.

try again m8,it will get it right unless the digi display is past it.

its just luck of the draw connecting the battery up,weather the display works correctly or not.

best to have a m8 connecting up while you watch.

leave it disconnected for a bit before trying again.

pulling out the fuse just has the same effect.

It could be damp inside due to lack of use. When I have not used my Mk1 for the winter and start to use it again and got o reconnect the battery, all the warning lights came on!  With a bit of use it cleared itself.

Also check to make sure you have an earth lead that connects to the right hand side of the head. It is on one of the nuts that secure the rocker cover on. That earth is for the MFA display, if it's not there or a bad connection, theres your problem.

:banghead:
right, ive cleaned everthing-earth wire to rocker cover, battery connections etc etc.at the last count we re-connected the battery - then + 87 times.each time gettig various different readings non of which made any sense at all.
so,we then changed the clocks which were checked b 4 removal and they dont work either,so i guess ive got a problem somewhere but where  :dontknow: .

is the battery right? it is brand new and has 45 a/h on it,should it be 54 or 63 a/h?been thru haynes it doesnt specify exactly so will check with V.A.G tomorrow.

with all the cleaning my engine + bay are looking pretty dazzling,so not a total let down.

cheers again for all yer help, Lee

36 Amp hours is standard (at least for the 1.6). 45 Amp hours is fine. But it makes no difference to getting your MFA to work.

are there any other symptoms m8?

do the lights or anything affect the dials or lighting?
any water temp or oil lights flashing?

sounds like a wiring problem now,if youve tried other clocks…

IT'S A MIRACLE!!!

Guys, just got home and thought i'd take her out for an airing……..but whats this?

the time is up on the M.F.A  :?

everything else is working too, every switch lights up,all mfa functions work.perhaps we didnt give it enough time to settle when doing the battery leads, which were extremely lagged in grease as was the earth to the rocker cover now they just have a smearing of petroleum jelly on them as do all the other connections under the bonnet.

I'm now very happy, i think the old girl just wanted some attention paid to her after being left for over a year(the wife says she knows the feeling) what does she mean????

Thanks to everybody for their input,(it's all helpful when you don't know what yer doin')
