Main beam lights with a mind of their own....

This is a problem that has only started since the weekend. Basically the main beams on my Mk1 will come on for no apparant reason and stick on no matter what I switch on / off / thump / swear at  :|

It can be really annoying when it happens behind someone else as they tend to take it as a comment on their driving and rapidly get a bit tetchy (understandably). They will go off as mysteriously as they come on and there seems to be nothing in particular that triggers it.

I have my MOT tomorrow, and noticed my hazard flasher switch seems to have stopped "flashing", and wondered oif the two things might be related. I have one of the BRM uprated looms fitted with inline fuses and relays - are these likely to be part of the problem? They are not very well protected from the elements in the engine bay now I come to think of it.

Would a dodgy headlight switch in the dash cause problems like this?

I have a new hazard switch and headlight switch I am going to fit now, but would like to trace the cause as sods law is that they will play up during the MOT tomorrow

Have checked all the usual earth connectors including the fuse box and nothing seems to be out of place / wet / damaged.

Any ideas appreciated. The headlights and main beam seem to work normally as long as the main beam problem is not in progress.

I'd just pull the connectors apart forn the lights and make sure they are good - pull the fuses and reseat also.

This is a recurring problem that people seem to have and relates to a bad earth that find it's way to earth through the lights - any thing else not working correctly or tries to work when the lights are on?

My lights used to play up all the time, was quite funny!!  My full beams would come on if i pressed the break!? Had the full loom replaced after an electrical fire….

have a look at the yellow connector to the fuse box, clean up your contacts... i have the same problem but have located the problem down to a faulty fuse box (i can see a loose pin) ..... paid ?50 for it at gsf last year aswell!
