Main beam light and Windscreen Washer problem

Mornin' all. Sadly, my 83 GTi cabby has just failed its MOT. Happily its only failed on a couple of (hopefully) minor things, which I think are probably electrical faults, and I am hoping somebody might be able to offer some advice.

Firstly, my passenger side main beam does not work. When I switch to main beam it goes to sidelights. Have changed the bulb, and same thing happens. Could this be a fuse problem?

Secondly, the windscreen washers are behaving oddly - sometimes the left squirter works ok, but with just a feeble squirt coming out of the right, and then if I try again, the right squirter is fine, but the left is not working at all. Very weird, and I dont know what to do. COuld this again be down to fuses?

If it is fuses, does anyone know which fuses I need to look at. I have found some info on these forums that seems to indicate fuse 10 for High Beam left and fuse 11 for windscreen wipers and washer, but this may not be for my model, so again any pointers would be good.

Enough of my waffling. I leave myself in your capable hands. Many thanks.

Look at http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7481

He is having the same problem so it might answer your problem?

Your washers ……You need to flush out the whole washer bottle and pipes etc using an air line or similar . I would say that the pump is working okay so nothing to do with fuzes . It could be simply down to crap in the pipes and washer heads . Flush it all out and only use proper washer fluid , not washing up liquid , this blocks the washers and gives you the symptoms you have .

Cheers…….

Many thanks - problems now solved. Washer nozzles/pipes were full of rubbish so gave them a good clean out. The lighting problem was solved simply by changing the fuse - if only everything could be so easy.  :P
