Main beam flash

Is there a way to have a proper flash rather than the on/off latching in the switch? I was wondering if the early mk2 switchgear did this and whether it could be used with the mk1 stalk.

Don't quite get what you mean - The Mk1's have proper flashing? Unless it is an early one and they are different?

When I pull the stalk, it just latches so that main beam is switched on when the lights come on. I don't know what it looks like from the outside. I'm used to having so much movement providing a flash and then continuing onto the main beam on/off.

Check it out in the dark tonight - Lights should flash before the latch kicks in. If not, you might just need to have a look at the stalk, possibly replace. Contacts can become dirty and corroded causing failiure...

I'd go with AL_mk1's suggestion and clean up all the contacts on the stalk. From what I remember when mine was apart, most of the terminals are faily easy to clean when you take the stalk off the car. See if that improves things, if not might be looking at a replacement stalk if you want to get that bit of it working.  It is right though, the lights should come on before the stick clicks into locking on main beam

The early Mk2 main beam is just the same as the Mk1, always latches.  Same on scirocco and passat too.  If you can get it to flash by pulling the arm just far enough, good luck!
