Lights behind clocks have decided to fubar????

This is an interesting one, ive been having problems with my dash lights behind the speedo and rev counter. The problem being they were nto working. Anyway I changed clocks however they still don?t work.

But and a big but, when my car is sat with the ignition off and you turn the lights on, they illuminate, but when you turn the ignition on they go off. I think something is wired incorrect. Somethings is  being live fed direct from the ignition.

But im no auto-electrician, is this a common problem and can anyone help.

 It?s a 1983 golf gti 8v k-jet

 Cheers, Jon.

Well - the obvious thing to check first is the earth lead to rocker cover.

If this is off, or loose, or rusty, you'll get gremlins galore, especially with the clocks.

Have you searched for dash light problems on the forum?

There are gazillions of nuggets of information on the forum - but you do have to use a search engine to find them.
