Intermittent Rev counter
Rev counter will sit at zero when underway, then come to life … then not. No pattern. Can be fine for days. Don't notice a weather difference. It's a connection somewhere … but where's best to start ? Dash or engine bay. Not sure which wire I'm looking for. Sorry if the question is basic.

Points?
Has your car got electronic ignition or points?A while back when father had his Mk1 1.3 the rev counter started misbehaving it ended up being the points even though the car started and ran alright, you would have thought that it would have had a miss fire or something if the points were corroded but that wasn't the case.If you have electronic ignition then as previous said check coil connections and then multi plug on the back of the dash.

I had this issue on a MK2. Spent ages trying to trace it - even had the instrument display changed - still no good, Then founfd it by accident - crappy HT leads! New leads and bingo - all OK!
