Instrument Issues

Hi all…

As i would expect with a 21 year old car, i have a few problems with the instruments, namely;

Temp and Fuel gauges work intermittently.

Temp warning light flashes and then goes off (can be at any time). Switching the Headlights on stops it !?! - also appears to be idependant to wether the gauge is working or not.

Fuel economy indicator and change light have never worked… haven't even seen the needle for the gauge!!

Rev counter has stopped a couple of times - a flick of the finger on the dash brings it back to life.

I'm a bit of an electrical numpty (being a mechanical engineer). I will be checking all the fuses, however my suspicion is these will be fine as most of the instruments work allbeit intermitantly!
I'm going to take the dash out (once i get time) and give the connections a clean up and check the earths. Is there anything i should be careful off during removal?

I'm also going to try and fit a new head unit and CD Multichanger… any suggestions on the best place to mount the changer? (It's a 10 disk that can be mounted vertically or horizontally).

Cheers all

Before you pull the dash out, check that the earth strap on the rocker cover is connected properly. It should be connected to the rear right hand bolt as you look at the cover and it connects to either the bulk head or goes into the wiring loom. The wire should be brown.

I mounted my CD changer in the boot on the off side.

Fingers crossed everything ok (appears to be working!)

Earth wire from rocker cover to loom was in place, however the strap from cover to bulkhead wasn't attached :roll:

Did find another 'free' earth wire. tried connecting it and all that resulted was oil pressure lamp flashing (no buzzing). disconnected it again and all fine. i assume it needs to be connected elsewhere? :dontknow:

Thanks for your help Dano, saved me a bit of grief there!
